When Are You Allowed To Eat Spicy Food After Wisdom Teeth Removal?

We understand the urge to find comfort in food, especially after getting your teeth pulled out. And if you are a fan of spices, the urge may make things go haywire post-op. You must hold on to the jalapenos since eating spicy food after wisdom teeth removal is not advised. Let’s find out why.

When Can You Get Back To Eating Spicy Food After Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

It is best to avoid spicy foods for at least 1 week after wisdom teeth removal to ensure a smooth healing process. The reason why it is ill-advised is due to the possibility of irritation at the surgical site due to the spice causing discomfort. If you experience discomfort or pain, take it as a sign of you not being ready for spicy foods yet. Dentists recommend reintroducing spicy foods gradually, starting with mild options and then increasing the level over time.

What Can You Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Your dentist will recommend a soft food diet after wisdom teeth extraction, which is particularly rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals for adequate healing and smooth recovery. A good diet is needed to prevent a complication called dry socket, an excruciatingly painful condition to deal with.

A dry socket is a consequence when the fresh and fragile blood clot dislodges from the extraction site, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. This results in significant pain, delay in healing, and increases your risk of infection.

To prevent this from happening, opt for soft foods such as:

  • Applesauce
  • Pureed fruits
  • Warm (not hot) broth
  • Cream soups
  • Smoothies (avoid using a straw)
  • Cottage cheese
  • Milk
  • Pudding
  • Jelly
  • Yogurt
  • Hummus
  • Protein shakes (no straw)
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Greek yogurt

All of the items mentioned above are not only nutritious but require minimal chewing and minimize the risk of dislodging the blood clot. Additionally, by incorporating protein sources such as boneless fish filets, well-cooked lentils, beans, or chickpeas, support wound healing. Protein rebuilds tissues and promotes faster recovery.

While you are allowed to eat when you feel like it after surgery, the level of numbness that you still feel from anesthesia will be a deciding factor.
