What to Expect After a Dental Bone Graft

If you need a dental bone graft, then you might be nervous for your procedure. After all, bone grafts sound pretty intimidating! Luckily though, there is nothing to be worried about. Bone grafts are simple procedures. That being said, you might still want to know what the process- and the recovery- is like. Read on to learn what to expect after a dental bone graft.

What is a Bone Graft?

A bone graft is a medical procedure that replaces weak or damaged bone. Grafts can be performed anywhere in the body where there is bone loss- including the mouth. In dentistry, a bone graft is used to strengthen a patient’s jaw, usually to prepare for dental implants or other oral surgeries.

Bone Graft Procedure

So what happens during the procedure? Well, this depends on the type of graft that is being performed. Bone grafts are usually done using bone harvested from the patient’s body, typically from the leg, hip, or another part of the jaw. This is the preferred method, as the patient’s body is better able to recognize this material. However, other materials (not from the patient’s body) can be used, too.

If bone is being used from your body, then you will have two surgical sites. However, since the bone graft is so small, it is usually well tolerated. You will be sedated while the bone is harvested and given pain medications for your recovery. Your oral surgeon will then place the new bone material in between sections of your existing bone, allowing them to grow together in time.

What to Expect After a Dental Bone Graft

The entire bone graft procedure is usually very quick. But what can you expect after the dental bone graft procedure? You will leave your dentist’s office with a gauze-packed mouth and specific care instructions. Expect mild discomfort for a few days. With pain relievers, rest, and a soft/liquid diet, you should be feeling like yourself again in no time.
