Do You Really Need to Floss?

To most of us dental flossing every time we brush our teeth seems tedious and unnecessary. It’s just another small thing that we end up skipping in our ever-busier lives. But what if I told you that flossing even once a day could save your life? Ok that might be a little dramatic, but the point is that this menial task is more important than you might think.

Much like not brushing your teeth can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and negative effects to overall health, flossing is the same way. When you floss, you remove food particles from areas that your toothbrush can’t reach (i.e. between your teeth) that can cause cavities. You also remove plaque and limit any buildup of plaque, thereby preventing tartar, which must be removed by a dentist.

While you should be dental flossing twice daily, it is most important after eating, or if you choose to do so once a day, at the end of the day is best. which lowers your risk for not only cavities but certain diseases as well. It can also reduce your risk of receding gums, by preventing buildup. At the end of the day, what’s another couple of minutes in front of the mirror if it saves you time and money during your next dental visit.
